Since the latest release of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard we decided to give up support for older systems. Leopard helps us to program faster, more stable code in less time. In addition we think that a lot of SolarSeek users will have switched to 10.5 when the first stable release is ready.
Currently we are in an alpha phase where we try to get the most basic functionalities working. There are still some important codelines to be written but we are confident to deliver one of the best SoulSeek client code ever written for the Mac.

I am very excited. Do you have a mailing list or any way I can be informed when you release a new version of Solarseek?

Wow still in development, cool!!!
As this is the only soulseek app for Mac, I am really looking forward to this release, especially as the previous version have been quite instable disconnecting me from the network after some minutes.

I’m sorry to disappoint you Mike, but SolarSeek is far from dead. Marcelo, has been writing and using internal builds with all new written code where we can search, chat, download, upload and more. I can verify this by looking at the code myself and running some of the builds on my machine. Also I would love to see you try and understand the Soulseek protocol (with all of these lovely data packets that need to be compressed and decompressed constantly http://www.museek-plus.org/wiki/SoulseekProtocol ) and help us out.

Wow…It’s a good news for me. I do expect the new solarseek of leopard version..

i’m still waiting for a stable and working version of solarseek just because of the interface design. Otherwise, i would already have forgotten you for a long time using SoulseeX
Posted by victor – Nov 19, 11:29 – Permalink
Can’t wait for it.

off the record, how much time is left?

Looks great, but downloads won’t work on my Macbook. Tried on 2 different DSL lines. SoulSeex still seems the better deal. Hope to see a new version soon!

Its very shaky with Leopard to the point where I dont even use it anymore
Which is a crying shame as the thing I miss most since switching from a PC is SoulSeek
Is it too much work to release a BETA of SolarSeek that is stable for Leopard? If it is gonna push 1.0 further back then it doesnt matter. I’m just asking. If its too much work then I can wait

We are working as hard and as fast as we can on an alpha that looks decent and is usable. By usable I mean supporting the major features, connecting to the network, searching, downloading, uploading, browsing, get info, chatting. Once we get the first alpha out all the delays and waiting that you guys have experienced will be explained.
Posted by Jon Kantro – Nov 20, 09:19 – Permalink
Do you guys have an estimate? I mean like two weeks? Two months?
Posted by mathijs Delva – Nov 21, 01:03 – Permalink
the second one.

I am more and more disappointed about the community of users and developers around mac… Decisions like this make me confirm the elitism subtly present on every piece of software for macosx. If this were a really open source project, you wouldn’t take decisions like this one. And surely, if mac users weren’t so Windozer-like users, there were enough developers for issuing Solarseek soft for Tiger and older versions for example.
It’s really comfortable to criticize and don’t do anything (like me right now): I’m a develover, but having two works and uni at the moment gives me no time to spend on this. And it’s a pity, cos I believe in your (port) project, although I’m too disappointed with this decision. Luckily for the good who have *nix in our systems… Really a pity, it’s not worth to pay for a leopard-i’m-cool-interface…

@idmnified: It wasn’t an easy decision at all. Creating the interface on Leopard was much easier than it was on Tiger. It also resolved quite a few interface bugs we we’re having on Tiger. On top of that with garbage collection in Objective-C 2.0, along with quite a few nice updates with core-data it was a no brainer. Development has been moving much faster since we decided to go this route. It has caused a lot less head aches. I don’t know if you have Leopard but other than the cosmetic updates, it is a major update for developers as all the goodies and updates are under the hood.

I think this makes a lot of sense.
Clearly Leopard is great for developers and this can only mean that a more stable & polished Soulseek client can be produced for OSX which is surely what everyone wants!

yes, it makes a lot of sense… if you purchased Leopard.
I’d have to stay using the beta, wich would be “the most stable & polished Soulseek client” they could offer me.

please consider the fact that a lot of solarseek users that now use it on 10.4 will have switched to 10.5 when a stable release is avaible or in other words: when we think solarseek is ready for a normal mac user. with that said you can also estimate how long you will have to wait for solarseek 1.0.

Hey…
SolarSeek is and has been the best out there for a long time!
I’m still using it with Leopard, even though I seem to be having trouble deleting some files after they’ve downloaded.
I’ll wait for the new update. Keep up the good work!

Can’t wait!! Many thanks for creating this app.

I hope it;s released soon because this version is purest shite. Love the program in general, couldn’t live without it.

Leopard is terrible…don’t stop supporting 10.4.x, i really like solarseek and I would hate to see it disappear on my computer.

@idmnified: I know what you mean. When I switched to Mac nearly five years ago there wasn’t a viable SoulSeek client. Today it’s even worse. And yet, if you look at how many users are in the SolarSeek chatroom, you’d have to say that there would be sufficient demand for the application (enough, even, for a business model or some sort of project plan). What is it about the Mac platform and user base that has been patently unable to produce a decent implementation of SoulSeek?
(Of course, there are ten million redundant applications claiming “{X} is a new way of organizing, viewing, and sharing all your documents, images, and emails.” Boring. And ten million GTD apps too. Maybe Mac users are really boring office nerds at heart who prefer endlessly “reorganizing” and “viewing” all their documents rather than actually listening to music.)
I’m afraid that a better—and faster—solution at this point would be to establish an alternative to SoulSeek itself (nobody say BitTorrent, because Soulseek is much better for making random discoveries and finding things one song-at-a-time).
